Principle Methods of End of Charge Detection:
| Type of Control | Functioning | Graph |
| Control by timer: | Based on establishing a charge time, which when passed, the charger will either stop charging or change over to trickle charge. | ![]() |
| Control by voltage detection. | Cut-off when pre-defined voltage level is reached. This is detection which is not used very often as it depends on the technology, the charging methods, the temperature, etc. | ![]() |
| Cut-off when maximum voltage level is reached. The charging is cut off when the Charge Voltage level reaches its maximum point. | ![]() |
|
| Cut-off by detection of negative variation in the charge voltage level. The charge intensity is cut-off when the charger electronics detect a pre-set negative variation in the battery charge voltage level. 10 mV/cell for the Ni/Cd for battery packs, and 5mV/cell for the Ni/MH cell. | ![]() |
|
| Control by temperature: | Cut-off by absolute temperature. The charge is cut-off when the temperature reaches set levels. Normally this level is 45%. This level is not recommended since the battery can be charged insufficiently or in excess depending on the conditions of the temperature of the environment. | ![]() |
| Cut-off by pre-set temperature variation. The charge is cut off when the positive temperature variation runs between 0.5º C and 1ºC per minute. This is one of the most highly recommended methods. | ![]() |
